Louise McKay is about to complete her
final year at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, in Adelaide, studying cello
with Janis Laurs. This year, she was selected as an Australian Chamber Orchestra
'Emerging Artist' and has recently completed a regional tour with ACO2.
In July 2007, Louise was invited to attend the summer school 'Ferme de Villefavard' in France where she studied intensively with Michel Strauss, cello professor at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. She has performed as soloist twice at the Elder Conservatorium and also with orchestras in Melbourne and Perth. As a recitalist and chamber musician, Louise has been heard on ABC Classic FM, 5MBS, 3MBS, 2MBS, Radio Adelaide, Radio Fremantle and was invited to attend the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in 2005 which was also supported by the University of Adelaide. In 2004, Louise was the youngest recipient of a full scholarship to complete the Advanced Performance Program at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne and has competed in several national and international competitions. Notably, Louise won the $10,000 Costa National Prize at the Geelong Advertiser Competition earlier this year, she was selected to compete in the Prague Spring International Music Competition in 2006 ' a venture that was generously supported by the Kamala Khurana Scholarship for Music Performance through the University of Adelaide. Louise was also named 'Most Promising Player' in the Gisborne International Recital Competition (New Zealand, 2004); was awarded 2nd prize in the North Queensland Concerto Competition Open Section, 2005 and was named 'Young Performer of the Year' at the Perth Terrace Proms in 2003. She received Recitals Australia Awards in 2005 and 2007. Louise is a fellowship holder with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and also plays casually with the West Australian and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras. She has been associate principal cello of the Australian Youth Orchestra and has participated in National Music Camp and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra fellowship program. In 2008, Louise will again study at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne and hopes to travel overseas for further study in the near future. |
